New price levels in Frankfurt and in Wiesbaden and its surroundings

Attractive prices in Frankfurt

Since December 2018, short journeys outside Frankfurt's city limits have become more cost-effective. This has become possible due to a finer classification of the fare zones and the introduction of two new price levels 30 and 40.

This also applies to journeys between the following cities or municipalities in the surrounding areas, mostly still differentiated according to individual suburbs, and Frankfurt:

  • in the Hochtaunus district: Bad Homburg, Oberursel, Schmitten, Steinbach
  • in the Main-Kinzig district: Hanau, Maintal
  • in the Main-Taunus district: Bad Soden, Eschborn, Hattersheim, Kriftel, Liederbach, Schwalbach, Sulzbach
  • in the city/district of Offenbach: Mühlheim, Neu-Isenburg, Offenbach; in addition, for routes outside Hanau: Seligenstadt, Hainburg and Mainhausen
  • in the Wetteraus district: Bad Vilbel.

In order to save money, the station or the suburb/district or the fare zone number of the suburb/district must be specified in detail. The correct selection of the destination is also important in order to ensure that you do not accidentally become a fare dodger. Because if you enter a nearby destination in Frankfurt but travel beyond it into Frankfurt, your ticket will no longer be valid. Passengers can easily get information about the price from A to B with integrated information about the fares by entering the start and end station in the connection information fields in the RMV app as well as at ticket vending machines.

IMPORTANT: Day, weekly, monthly and annual tickets shall no longer be automatically valid from outside Frankfurt for any desired destination selection in Frankfurt for the entire Main fare zone Frankfurt (fare zone number 5000) including fare zone Airport (fare zone number 5090). If you would like your ticket to be valid in the entire city area including the airport, please inform the sales staff about the same or enter the destination no. "5000" into the vending machine. Due to the larger territorial validity, these season tickets are only available at the common price levels 4 or 5.

Those who have a weekly, monthly or annual ticket until one of the new fare zones in Frankfurt and would like to travel beyond it can purchase a connecting ticket.

Questions and answers about the price levels 30 and 40 in the region surrounding Frankfurt and Wiesbaden

Journeys between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden and certain neighbouring communes or areas should be cheaper for short distances in order to cushion massive price surges.

Short journeys beyond Frankfurt or Wiesbaden’s city limits will become cheaper. This will become possible due to a finer classification of the fare zones and the introduction of the two new price levels 30 (Frankfurt, Wiesbaden) and 40 (Frankfurt). Instead of a uniform price, a “short journey, smaller price” will now be applicable for a lot of journeys between specific surrounding municipalities and the desired travel destination or Wiesbaden.

The Frankfurt city area (fare zone 5000) has been divided into the following small fare zones, which are essentially aimed at districts of Frankfurt:

  • 5001 – Frankfurt Centre (Frankfurt City)
  • 5002 – Höchst, Sindlingen, Unterliederbach, Zeilsheim
  • 5003 – Sossenheim
  • 5004 – Rödelheim, Praunheim
  • 5005 – Bonames, Heddernheim, Kalbach-Riedberg, Nieder-Eschbach, Niederursel
  • 5006 – Frankfurter Berg, Harheim
  • 5007 – Bergen-Enkheim
  • 5008 – Fechenheim
  • 5009 – Oberrad
  • 5010 – Niederrad, Sachsenhausen-Nord, Sachsenhausen-Süd
  • 5012 - Schwanheim
  • 5059 – Unfallklinik (Bus line 30: Stops Unfallklinik, Unfallklinik/B3, Parkfriedhof Heiligenstock, Heiligenstock/Lohrberg, Lohrberg).

The entire city area of Frankfurt has (from the outside) the fare zone number 5000.

The price level 30 will be applicable between Wiesbaden and the following communes / suburbs.

  • Eltville
  • Kiedrich
  • Niedernhausen
  • Schlangenbad
  • Taunusstein

The new price levels apply to journeys between the following cities or municipalities in the surrounding areas and Frankfurt, mostly still differentiated according to individual suburbs:

  • in the Hochtaunus district: Bad Homburg, Oberursel, Schmitten, Steinbach
  • in the Main-Kinzig district: Hanau, Maintal
  • in the Main-Taunus district: Bad Soden, Eschborn, Hattersheim, Kriftel, Liederbach, Schwalbach, Sulzbach
  • in the city/district of Offenbach: Mühlheim, Neu-Isenburg, Offenbach; in addition, for routes outside Hanau: Seligenstadt, Hainburg and Mainhausen
  • in the Wetteraus district: Bad Vilbel

You can see exactly which suburbs are affected in the linked table (PDF) and in the schematic overview (PDF).

The journey between Schwanheim and the airport will become cheaper within Frankfurt for holders of single and day tickets.

For journeys within Frankfurt, the city price level 3 shall apply. For short distances within the city, short distance tickets are available.

No, the journeys to the airport are not affected by these benefits. An exception is the journey between Schwanheim and the airport – now city price level 3, Frankfurt.

No, the price level 13 shall continue to apply within Wiesbaden.

The new price levels apply to all RMV tickets, i.e. for single tickets and day tickets as well as for season tickets such as weekly, monthly and annual tickets.

The price range of the price level 30 is between the price levels 3 and 4. The savings compared to price level 4 amount to approximately 17%. The price range of the price level 40 is between the price levels 4 and 5. The savings compared to price level 5 amount to approximately 20%. The exact prices can be found in the latest RMV price list (PDF).

The savings on the affected travel routes for the single adult ticket amounts to between 17% (e.g. Neu-Isenburg – Frankfurt Centre (Frankfurt City) or Eltville - Wiesbaden, formerly price level 4, now price level 30) and 34% (e.g. Offenbach – Frankfurt-Oberrad, formerly price level 4, now price level 3).

No, the cheaper tickets to Frankfurt are applicable only to the new Frankfurt “district fare zones” (5001-5010, 5012 und 5059), which are close to the start location or the start tariff zone. IMPORTANT: Even weekly, monthly and annual tickets shall no longer be automatically valid, as before, for any desired destination selection in Frankfurt for the entire Main fare zone Frankfurt (fare zone number 5000) including fare zone Airport (fare zone number 5090). If you would like your ticket to be valid in the entire city area including the airport, please inform the sales staff about the same or enter the destination no. "5000" into the vending machine. Due to the bigger territorial validity, the ticket price will consequently increase, however.

The biggest part of the city area (6501) is accessible at the reduced fare. This also applies to Delkenheim, provided that the destination can be reached en route Wiesbaden. Journeys via Wallau and Hochheim am Main will be carried out at the previous price.

Then, as before, a connecting ticket along with the season ticket, i.e. a discounted single ticket for the entire route may be purchased.

Yes, even cities and municipalities such as Hanau or Schmitten will profit from journeys to certain fare zones in Frankfurt. For instance, the discounted journeys here shall take place at the price level 40 instead of the previous price level 5 (price saving of 20%). Please note: The discounted price level 30 and 40 can always only be used to travel across sub-areas of Frankfurt and not the entire city area of Frankfurt.

Based on the linked table as well as in the schematic overview, you can find out whether you can profit from the newly reduced fares for your desired journey and the price level applicable to your journey. In the table, discounts are highlighted in bold in comparison with previous prices. However, please note that in each case, only the shortest possible connection is taken into consideration. Reliable information about the price levels or prices for your desired journey is available in the RMV connection information along with integrated tariff information.

In the same way as the other tickets, i.e. depending on the type of ticket, the tickets can be purchased at vending machines, from the bus driver, from the online RMV TicketShop or VGF WebShop, via the RMV app using the smartphone or at the manually operated outlet.

In order to save money, the station or the suburb/district or the fare zone number of the suburb/district must be specified in detail, though. The correct selection of the destination is also important in order to ensure that you do not accidentally become a fare dodger. Because if you enter a nearby destination in Frankfurt but travel beyond it into Frankfurt, your ticket will no longer be valid.

For the journey to Wiesbaden, it is only important to differentiate between Delkenheim (6505) and the rest of the city area (6501).

A stop index is printed in several transport network area timetable books. The stop index for Frankfurt and Wiesbaden can be found in the above downloads.

This question is raised only when purchasing season tickets. If you would like to travel to Frankfurt from one of the relevant surrounding municipalities, enter fare zone number 5000 for the destination number selection in the vending machine. If you would like to travel to a relevant bordering surrounding municipality from the outskirts of Frankfurt, you will automatically receive a ticket from the vending machine at the discounted price level, since the location of the vending machine is automatically determined as the start destination. The ticket therefore generally does not include the entire city area of Frankfurt. You can find out which destination selection is suitable for your desired journeys by calling the RMV hotline 069/24 24 80 24 or by visiting your outlet.

Yes, it is possible to return tickets and to purchase a new one. Changes in annual tickets are possible on the first of each month if they have been communicated on or before the 10th of the previous month. Please obtain information about the same at your outlet.

In that case, you will need to pay a penalty fare of 60 euros. The price level 30 also exclusively applies to journeys to Wiesbaden – but not for journeys to the fare zones for bordering areas (Hochheim, Wallau, ...)

There is no price reduction being implemented, but rather, there are two additional price levels being introduced in order to cushion price surges. But RMV smart is a pilot project for a distance-dependent fare system, where there are no price levels and fare limits.

Frankfurt and Mainz/Wiesbaden have the starting price level 3. A journey beyond the fare limit therefore immediately used to cost price level 4 previously, which is unreasonably expensive for short distances. The remaining cities and municipalities in the RMV start from the price level 1 and 2, resulting in significantly lower price surges for the onward journey. The solution found is therefore initially valid only for Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. A corresponding provision is not required for Mainz, since the bordering municipalities are already accessible at the price level 13.
