RheinMain eTicket - smartcard replaces paper
The Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) is transferring its annual season tickets over to a new system with immediate effect. In future, a plastic card in handy credit card format will replace the twelve individual paper tickets. If you currently hold a season ticket, you’ll be sent the new eTicket when your old season ticket is due to expire.
If you’re a new customer or pay by cash, you can pick up the electronic annual season ticket from RMV sales outlets displaying the white and blue eTicket logo. The colourful plastic card isn’t just more practical for customers - it also provides additional benefits. If you lose it, you can block it. If you register your annual season ticket, it will be replaced - and that goes for transferable tickets as well. Soon you’ll be able to make any changes - such as a change to your home address or a different combination of fare zones - yourself from your own computer.
What types of eTickets can I buy in future?
There will be two types of annual season ticket, as there are now. A named ticket and a transferable ticket. The 9.00 annual season ticket will also be available in the named and transferable versions. The eTicket has the same benefits as the old annual season ticket. The regulations governing accompanied ticket holders and the savings you can make - twelve months for the price of ten - still apply.
The eTicket named annual season ticket will carry the photo and name of the customer. All annual season tickets are registered, which makes it easier to replace lost smartcards. If you are paying in cash for your named smartcard, you have the choice of either remaining completely anonymous or registering the smartcard in your name.
This option is also available for transferable annual season tickets. A new feature available with the eTicket is the facility to block an annual season ticket if you lose it. Your smartcard will then be replaced quickly if you’ve already registered or when you present the original receipt.
How do I get hold of the new eTicket?
The eTicket annual season ticket will be sent out to annual season ticket holders in good time before the old season ticket expires.
For new customers, eTicket annual season tickets are on sale at RMV sales outlets displaying the white and blue eTicket logo. The following exception applies to customers from Wiesbaden, Mainz and Rüsselsheim: ESWE Verkehr Wiesbaden, Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) and Local Passenger Transport Organisation of Rüsselsheim will only be transferring their sales of annual season tickets over the eTicket system in August 2012. The eTicket is also available from many of Deutsche Bahn’s customer service centres. From July 2012 onwards, the eTicket will also be available from all other Deutsche Bahn customer service centres. A list with the sales outlets for the RheinMain eTicket is enclosed.
Customers - including new customers in Wiesbaden, Mainz and Rüsselsheim - can order the new ticket at the RMV TicketShop.
Soon you will also be able to manage your own data at the “MyRMV” customer portal. You will then also be able to change to a different annual season ticket product online.
How will the eTicket be checked?
As before, on many bus services you will present your annual season ticket when you board the bus. However, the smartcard will no longer by checked by the bus driver, but instead by a reader with a digital display. Data is transferred between the smartcard and the reader using magnetic waves. A visual and acoustic signal will show that the ticket is valid as all the relevant ticket information is stored on the smartcard. The display will then show “OK”, a green light or a green tick.
There are no readers permanently installed on rail vehicles. Here, the transport company inspectors will continue to check whether a passenger has a valid ticket. Staff will also continue to check tickets on buses, mainly where there are no readers for checking tickets (on some urban services, for example). Ticket inspectors will carry readers for checking eTickets.
Is any personal data stored on the smartcard?
The smartcard only contains the key data for your journeys, such as the type of ticket, period of validity and fare zones. The smartcard does not contain personal data. Your name and photo will be printed on the reverse side of the card if you have a named smartcard.
No journey information is stored when the smartcard is scanned by the reader on boarding a service. This means that the system cannot generate a profile of your movements. The RheinMain eTicket provides its users with the maximum degree of security in terms of data protection. The data protection authorities were involved in the development of the eTicket.
