Fare regulations

Affordable prices

In order to save money, it is important to mention the details about the stop or the district/city area or the tariff zone number of the district/city area. It is also important to select the correct destination in Frankfurt so that you do not accidentally become a fare dodger. Because if you enter a nearby destination in Frankfurt but travel beyond that destination, your ticket is no longer valid. Passengers can easily find out the price of A to B by entering the start and destination stops in the Connection Information with integrated tariff information, in the RMV App as well as from ticket machines.

IMPORTANT: Weekly, monthly and annual tickets are no longer automatically valid as before for any destination in Frankfurt for the complete A-tariff zone Frankfurt (tariff zone number 5000) including tariff zone Airport (tariff zone number 5090). If your season ticket should also be valid in the entire city area including Airport, please inform the sales staff or enter the destination no. “5000” on the ticket machines. Due to the large geographical validity, these season tickets are available only at the known price levels 4 or 5. Anyone who has a weekly, monthly or annual ticket up to one of the new tariff zones in Frankfurt and would like to travel beyond that can acquire a connecting ticket. For example, anyone who has a season ticket from Eschborn to Frankfurt-Rödelheim and wants to travel further to the destination in Frankfurt, can acquire a connecting ticket.

Consultation and more information is available via RMV-service phone, the RMV-social media-channels and at the RMV outlets.

Questions and answers on the new price levels

Trips between Frankfurt and the surrounding cities and counties should be cheaper on short distances so as to reduce large price surges.

Short trips over Frankfurt’s city limit will become cheaper. This will be possible by a delicate division of the tariff zones and the introduction of two new price levels 30 and 40. Instead of a uniform price, the principle “short drive, lower price” applies now to many trip relationships from several surrounding municipalities and the desired destination.

The Frankfurt city area (tariff zone 5000) has been divided into the following small tariff zones, which are mainly corresponding to the neighbourhoods of Frankfurt:

  • 5001 – Frankfurt centre (Frankfurt City)
  • 5002 – Höchst, Sindlingen, Unterliederbach, Zeilsheim
  • 5003 – Sossenheim
  • 5004 – Rödelheim
  • 5005 – Bonames, Heddernheim, Kalbach-Riedberg, Nieder-Eschbach, Niederursel
  • 5006 – Frankfurter Berg, Harheim
  • 5007 – Bergen-Enkheim
  • 5008 – Fechenheim
  • 5009 – Oberrad
  • 5010 – Niederrad, Sachsenhausen-North, Sachsenhausen-South
  • 5059 – Unfallklinik (Bus line 30: stops Unfallklinik, Unfallklinik/B3, Parkfriedhof Heiligenstock, Heiligenstock/Lohrberg, Lohrberg) The whole of Frankfurt city area has the tariff zone number 5000.

The new price levels apply to trips from the following surrounding cities or municipalities to Frankfurt, usually still differentiated according to individual districts:

  • in Hochtaunuskreis: Bad Homburg, Oberursel, Schmitten, Steinbach
  • in Main-Kinzig-Kreis: Hanau, Maintal
  • in Main-Taunus-Kreis: Bad Soden, Eschborn, Hattersheim, Kriftel, Liederbach, Schwalbach, Sulzbach
  • in the Offenbach city/district: Mühlheim, Neu-Isenburg, Offenbach; in case of relation via Hanau: Seligenstadt, Hainburg and Mainhausen
  • in Wetterauskreis: Bad Vilbel

The exact districts that are in question, can be viewed from linked table sowie der schematic overview(link matrix and overview).

No, nothing will change inside Frankfurt.

The city price level 3 (single ticket for adults is 2.75 euros) will continue to apply for trips within Frankfurt. There are short distance tickets for short distances within the city (adults pay 1.85 euros for this).

No, the trips to the airport are not affected by these concessions.

The new price levels apply to all RMV tickets, i.e. not only for single tickets and day tickets but also for season tickets such as weekly, monthly and annual tickets.

The price level of the new price level 30 lies between price levels 3 and 4. The savings against price level 4 are about 17%. The price level of the new price level 40 lies between price levels 4 and 5. The savings against price level 5 are about 20%. The exact prices are given in the current RMV Price list.

The savings on the affected trip relationships for the single adult ticket are between 17% (e.g. Neu-Isenburg - Frankfurt centre, previously price level 4, new price level 3) and 34% (e.g. Offenbach - Frankfurt-Oberrad, previously price level 4, new price level 3).

No, the more affordable tickets to Frankfurt are only valid for trips to the new Frankfurt "Tariff zone neighbourhoods" (5001-5010 and 5059), which are close to the starting point or starting tariff zone. However, the ticket price will then increase owing to the enhanced validity of the ticket.

In that case, a connecting ticket to the season ticket, i.e. a discounted single ticket for the entire trip, can be purchased as before (for instance, adults with a season ticket of price category 30 pay 2.90 euros for continued journeys to the airport).

Yes, cities and municipalities such as Hanau or Schmitten also benefit from journeys to certain Frankfurt tariff zones. Here, for instance, the discounted journeys in future will take place at the new price category 40 (single trip for adults at € 6.80) instead of the previous price category 5 (price saving of 20%). Please note: With the lower price categories 30 and 40, only parts of Frankfurt can be covered and not the entire city of Frankfurt!

The linked table and the schematic overview show you whether or not you will benefit from the new, lower prices for your preferred trip and also the price category fit for your trip. The benefits as compared to earlier rates are highlighted in bold in the table. Note, however, that only the shortest possible connection is taken into account here. Reliable information on the price categories or prices of your preferred trip can be found in the RMV connection information with integrated tariff information. .

The sale is carried out as for the other tickets, depending on the type of ticket on the ticket machine, with the bus driver, on the internet under RMV-TicketShop or VGF-WebShop, via the RMV smartphone App or at the man-operated outlet.

In order to save money, it is important to mention the details about the stop or the district/city area or the tariff zone number of the district/city area. It is also important to select the correct destination in Frankfurt so that you do not accidentally become a fare dodger. If you enter a nearby destination in Frankfurt, but travel beyond that destination in Frankfurt, your ticket is no longer valid.

A list of stops is printed in many network timetable books. You can find the list of stops in Frankfurt in our Downloads mentioned above.

You will be faced with this question only when buying season tickets. If you would like to travel to Frankfurt from one of the surrounding municipalities, enter the tariff zone number 5000 on the machine using the destination number. If you wish to travel from a suburb of Frankfurt to an adjacent district in question, you will automatically receive a ticket at the machine for the lowest price category, as the location of the machine is automatically set as the starting point. Therefore, the ticket does not usually include the entire area of Frankfurt city. Please contact the RMV service telephone number 069/24 24 80 24 or your sales outlet to find out which destination is the most suitable for your preferred trip.

Yes, it is possible to return season tickets and buy a new one. Changes to annual passes can be done on the first day of every month, so long as they are notified by the 10th day of the previous month. For more information, please contact your local sales outlet.

No price reduction will be implemented, but two additional price categories will be introduced to mitigate price jumps. However, RMV-smart is a pilot project for a distance-based tariff system in which there are no price categories and tariff limits.

The more detailed classification of the tariff zones serves as a model for the entire transport district. An expansion to other cities - e.g. Wiesbaden and the surrounding municipalities - is also doable.

Lower prices for short trips from/to Frankfurt

Anyone who previously purchased a ticket for a short trip to just outside the Frankfurt city limits, had to sometimes pay more than they would have for a significantly further trip within Frankfurt. This has changed since the timetable change on 9th December 2018, because short trips beyond the Frankfurt city limit have become much cheaper ever since. This is possible by a delicate division of the tariff zones and the two new price levels 30 and 40.

These apply to trips from the following surrounding cities or municipalities to Frankfurt, usually still differentiated according to individual districts:

  • in Hochtaunuskreis: Bad Homburg, Oberursel, Schmitten, Steinbach
  • in Main-Kinzig-Kreis: Hanau, Maintalin
  • Main-Taunus-Kreis: Bad Soden, Eschborn, Hattersheim, Kriftel, Liederbach, Schwalbach, Sulzbach
  • in the Offenbach city/district: Mühlheim, Neu-Isenburg, Offenbach; in case of relation via Hanau: Seligenstadt, Hainburg and Mainhausen
  • in Wetterauskreis: Bad Vilbel

Price level matrix

The price level matrix for short trips within the Frankfurt city limits shows the municipalities or districts benefitting from the new price levels. The municipalities are sorted by county and are subdivided into districts, if relevant. The price level for the shortest possible connection is illustrated.

The price levels in black and bold show the most affordable connections, whilst the geographical validity is restricted in the tariff zone 5000 Frankfurt am Main.

The new price levels 30 and 40

Price level 30 and price level 40 now exist between price levels 3 and 4 and price levels 4 and 5 respectively. The entire A-tariff zones are no longer authorised where the price levels 30 and 40 are used. This is possible by sub-dividing Frankfurt into multiple new tariff zones. The adjacent map shows the directly neighbouring municipalities based on the master tariff plan, which benefit from the new price levels in case of short trips to Frankfurt. The price level matrix also contains municipalities that are not directly bordering Frankfurt, but also benefit from the new price levels.
