How to get the discounted Deutschland-Ticket

Do you receive Citizen's Income, Housing Benefit Plus, social assistance or you are an asylum seeker?

No cash payment. All fare regulations of the Deutschland-Ticket apply.

Questions and answers

The D-Ticket currently costs €58.00 per month (€63.00 starting January 2026). But not everyone can afford the D-Ticket at the regular price.

To ensure that people on low incomes can also remain mobile, the state of Hesse offers a discounted D-Ticket for €39.00 per month (€44.00 starting January 2026).

You can receive the discount if you receive certain social benefits and live in Hesse. The Hessenpass mobil serves as proof – it is valid for one year and must be presented when ordering.

The discounted D-Ticket with the Hessenpass mobil costs 39,00 € per month as a subscription. Starting January 2026 the price will be adjusted to €44.00.

To purchase a discounted D-ticket, you need proof of eligibility in the form of the Hessenpass mobil.

You can obtain the Hessenpass mobil if you live in Hessen and receive at least one of the following benefits:

  • Citizen's income
  • Housing benefit
  • Social assistance
  • or are an asylum seeker.

Specifically, this means: Persons entitled to benefits under Section 7 of the Second Book of the Social Code (SGB II), those entitled to housing benefit under Section 3 (1), (2), (4) and (5) of the Housing Benefit Act (WoGG), those entitled to benefits under Section 19 (1) and (2) of the Social Security Code, Book XII (SGB XII), who receive ongoing benefits under Chapter 3 or 4 of SGB XII, as well as those entitled to benefits under Section 1 of the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (AsylbLG).

 

If you are eligible, you will automatically receive the Hessenpass mobil by post from your local office. You must present the Hessenpass mobil when purchasing the discounted Deutschland-Ticket.

Exception:

If you receive citizen's income from one of the following job centres, you will not automatically receive the certificate:

  • City of Darmstadt
  • City of Frankfurt am Main
  • Giessen district
  • Limburg-Weilburg district
  • City of Kassel
  • Kassel district
  • Schwalm-Eder district
  • Waldeck-Frankenberg district
  • Wetterau district
  • Werra-Meißner district

In this case, you will receive the certificate on request from your local social security provider.

The discounted Deutschland-Ticket with the Hessenpass mobil is for your personal use only and is valid for 12 months starting from the first day of your chosen month.

It entitles you to use:

  • Regional trains (RE, IRE, RB, S-Bahn) in 2nd class throughout Germany

  • Buses, trams, and underground trains operated by transport associations, regional transport companies or transport operators throughout Germany

  • Ferry services, provided these are included in the transport associations' fee

  • in neighbouring countris where association fares apply

  • It is not valid on long-distance trains operated by Deutsche Bahn (e.g. InterCity, ICE, EC) or on other long-distance providers (e.g. FlixTrain/FlixBus).

The following applies in the RMV network area:

  • For the AirLiner from Darmstadt to Frankfurt Airport, you must pay a surcharge of €3.80. You can obtain the surcharge tickets from the driving personnel, the RMV sales offices of HEAG mobilo and in the HEAG mobilo app.
  • For OnDemand services, there is no basic fare – you only pay a comfort surcharge and a price per kilometre.
  • In the VRN network area, you can also use it for journeys on the Krebsbachtalbahn and Bundenthaler railways, as well for journeys to Lauterbourg and Wissembourg.

The discounted D-Ticket with the Hessenpass mobil is for your personal use only.

Children under the age of 6 can travel with you free of charge. All other passengers require their own ticket.

The proof of eligibility for the Hessenpass mobil usually lists all eligible persons living in the household.

If each of them would like to use the discount, we recommend making a copy of the document for each individual.

If only individual persons are ordering a D-Ticket, please observe data protection regulations: obtain the consent of other persons listed or black out their names and personal data.

The discounted D-Ticket is personalized and non-transferable. It is only valid for the person it was issued to.
Therefore, you must carry a photo ID, such as an identity card or residence permit, and present it during ticket inspections.

You will automatically receive the Hessenpass mobil as proof of eligibility for the discounted D-Ticket from the same authority that issued your social benefits approval.

Exception:
If you receive Bürgergeld from one of the following job centres, you will not automatically receive the certificate:

  • City of Darmstadt           
  • City of Frankfurt am Main           
  • District of Gießen                           
  • District of Limburg-Weilburg          
  • City of Kassel                            
  • District of Kassel                            
  • Schwalm-Eder District               
  • Waldeck-Frankenberg district   
  • Wetterau district                          
  • Werra-Meißner district

In this case, you will receive the certificate on request from your locally competent social benefits agency.

The proof of eligibility is automatically sent out by the authority responsible for your social benefits. You don’t need to take any action.
If you haven’t received the document yet, please contact the office that issued your social benefits approval.

Exception:
If you receive Bürgergeld from one of the following Job Centres, you will not receive the certificate automatically:

  • City of Darmstadt           
  • City of Frankfurt am Main           
  • District of Gießen                           
  • District of Limburg-Weilburg          
  • City of Kassel                            
  • District of Kassel                            
  • Schwalm-Eder District               
  • Waldeck-Frankenberg district   
  • Wetterau district

In this case, you will receive the certificate on request from your locally responsible social benefits agency.

Please contact your local authority so that your Hessenpass mobil can be reissued.

The validity of your Hessenpass mobil is stated directly on the certificate.

The discounted D-Ticket is isued for one year. If you wish to renew it, please submit a new order form by the 10th of the month before the ticket expires. To do so, you must present a valid Hessenpass mobil.

In the RMV-TicketShop:

Enter your details and proof of eligibility during the ordering process and upload it in the appropriate place.

With an order form:

  1. You can fill out the order form online.
  2. Then print out the order form and sign it.
  3. Send it together with a copy of your Hessenpass mobil to the address indicated on the order form.

At an RMV sales outlet:

Fill out the order form directly on site and hand it in together with your Hessenpass mobil.

 

You will then receive the D-Ticket as an eTicket on a chip card by post.

Please note: This is an order and not a direct purchase at the sales outlet. Cash payments are not accepted.

As long as your Hessenpass mobil is valid, you can order the discounted D-Ticket.

Please note: The ticket must be valid for at least one day within the validity period of your Hessenpass mobil. In this case, the ticket can be issued for up to 12 month.

To order the discounted D-Ticket with the Hessenpass mobil, you will need:

  • Your Hessenpass mobil as proof that you are eligible for the discounted ticket.
  • For online orders in the RMV-TicketShop: Enter your bank details and set up a SEPA direct debit mandate or provide a valid credit card.
  • To order using an order form: Fill out the order form completely. This includes a SEPA direct debit mandate with your bank details. Don't forget to sign it.

The D-Ticket is available as a subscription. The monthly cost of €39.00 (€44.00 starting January 2026) will be automatically debited from your account via SEPA direct debit.

When ordering from the RMV-TicketShop, you can alternatively provide a valid credit card.

Important: Please ensure that your account has sufficient funds.

Cash payments or bank transfers are not possible.

Cash payments are not possible. You can only pay for the D-Ticket by SEPA direct debit via your bank account or, when ordering from the RMV-TicketShop, with a valid credit card.

You will receive the discounted D-Ticket as an eTicket on a chip card.  Please carry the chip card with you on every journey.

Retrospective reimbursement is not possible. You must present your Hessenpass mobil when purchasing the discounted D-Ticket.

The D-Ticket with Hessenpass mobil is only issued on a chip card. How you switch depends on how you use your current subscription:

If your subscription runs via RMVgo:

  • Cancel your existing D-Ticket subscription in the app by the 10th of the month. You will find this option in RMVgo under "My tickets" then "Ticket details" and then "Cancel subscription".
  • Your subscription will then end at the end of the month and will not be renewed.
  • You can then purchase your new D-Ticket with Hessenpass mobil via a chip card.

If you use a chip card:

  • You can continue to use your existing chip card.
  • Simply enter your chip card number when ordering.
  • We will then automatically convert your subscription to the discounted D-Ticket. This means you do not need to cancel your subscription beforehand.

The regulations for travel expense reimbursement continue to apply. Please check with the relevant authority to find out whether the costs will be covered in your case.

You can cancel your discounted D-Ticket at any time. Cancellation must be received in writing by the 10th of the month in order to take effect at the end of that month.

Example: If you no longer wish to use the ticket from 1 November, you must cancel by 10 October at the latest. If you cancel on 11 October, the ticket will remain valid until 30 November.

If you purchased your D-Ticket via the RMV-TicketShop, you can conveniently cancel it in the meinRMV customer portal. Simply go to "meinRMV", then "TicketShop Services" then "Orders placed in the TicketShop" and select the relevant D-Ticket. With just a few clicks, you can send your cancellation.
