What is the eTicket RheinMain?

The eTicket RheinMain is the RMV’s Mobility Ticket. Tickets are stored on it electronically. The eTicket RheinMain can be used again and again to purchase tickets. 

Furthermore, the eTicket RheinMain can also be used to access car sharing vehicles, pedelecs, electric cars, etc.

Which tickets are issued via eTicket RheinMain?

Exception: tickets for cross-network fare zones will still be issued in paper form.

How do I purchase the eTicket RheinMain?

Available at numerous sales offices, at ticket machines bearing the eTicket logo or online

Electronic tickets for the eTicket RheinMain are available at eTicket RheinMain sales offices. These are the RMV sales offices with the light blue eTicket logo and the Deutsche Bahn travel centres.

Weekly and monthly tickets for adults are also transferred to your smartcard at ticket machines bearing the eTicket logo. Be sure to always have your eTicket RheinMain with you to do so. eTicket-compatible DB machines can be found at the stations and rail stops for regional traffic.

To purchase, place the smartcard on the area marked with the (((e logo and purchase your ticket as usual. The new ticket will then be added to your eTicket RheinMain within seconds.

Currently, Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt (VGF) ticket machines in Frankfurt are also being upgraded, to enable purchasing electronic weekly or monthly tickets for adults.

All subscribed RMV annual tickets and within the transport district - except the 65-plus annual ticket - can also be booked online via RMV TicketShop. There you can also buy weekly and monthly tickets for adults (except for cross-network fares) to store on your eTicket smartcard.

If your smartcard is not registered in your name, you can only have it replaced at the sales office by showing the purchase receipt you received when your smartcard was first issued. If you did not receive a purchase receipt for the smartcard or if you disposed of it, please contact the sales office that issued it prior to possible replacement, to obtain it again (the receipt for a ticket purchase is not accepted!).

If you do not yet have an eTicket RheinMain and are not already an annual ticket or CleverCard subscriber, you will receive the eTicket when purchasing one of the tickets listed at the eTicket RheinMain sales offices.

Why you should have your eTicket RheinMain registered in your name

Registration makes replacement easier, in the event you ever lose your eTicket RheinMain. For example, a purchase receipt is not required when ordering a replacement. However, registration is not required to use the ticket!

How and where do I register my eTicket RheinMain?

You can register the eTicket RheinMain right at the sales office or online. When purchasing products such as annual tickets (without a subscription) or monthly tickets, the choice is yours: The employees will gladly register your smartcard to your name in the system, so it can be replaced quickly without a purchase receipt should you ever lose it. When purchasing individual annual subscriptions and CleverCards, the eTicket RheinMain is automatically registered to your name in the system.

Register online at meinRMV

Visit "meinRMV" to register your mobility ticket. To do so, first follow the simple registration steps at "meinRMV". You will receive the registration data (smartcard number and password) from the contracting partner together with your smartcard. In your "meinRMV" account, go to "Managing My Chip Cards" to access the following:

  • General information concerning the technical validity of your smartcard 
  • Information about the smartcard user (this data can be edited online)
  • Order a replacement smartcard (including blocking) if your card is lost or broken
  • View all (active) tickets stored on your smartcard, e.g. weekly and monthly tickets
  • View all (active) subscribed annual season tickets, edit the contractual data for those tickets (e.g. changing the adress or credit card details), and download the invoices for all subscribed tickets valid in the last 13 months
  • Customers of a CleverCard/CleverCard kreisweit can use all services except editing stored data.
  • View the last ten expired (no longer valid) tickets stored on your smartcard
  • Cancel the registration of your smartcard

Please note: The online manager at meinRMV cannot be used for VGF (Frankfurt), ESWE (Wiesbaden), MVG (Mainz) and HEAG mobilo (Darmstadt) smartcards at this time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I purchase a ticket for the eTicket RheinMain?

New RMV season tickets - i.e. weekly, monthly or annual tickets - can be uploaded to the eTicket RheinMain again and again. A new ticket can be purchased at any sales office bearing the blue eTicket logo, online from the RMV TicketShop or at a DB or VGF ticket machine. Important: Always have your smartcard with you because it is the carrier medium for your ticket.

How long can a smartcard be used?

RMV season tickets are electronically stored on the eTicket RheinMain. Therefore, the eTicket can be used to purchase tickets again and again. Even if your eTicket is "empty", i.e. there are currently no tickets stored on it, you keep your eTicket RheinMain for the next time you purchase a season ticket. It must be replaced after a period of 5 years at the latest.

What do I do if I lose my eTicket RheinMain?

Lost smartcards or unreadable smartcards with valid tickets can be replaced for a fee of 10.00 Euro. If the smartcard is clearly defective, there is no fee for replacement.

If your eTicket RheinMain is registered on "meinRMV", you can block the smartcard online and will receive a replacement smartcard (an electronic copy of your original eTicket) by post within a few days. For faster service, a replacement smartcard can also be issued right at the sales office.

If you did not register your smartcard, you can only have it replaced at the sales office by showing the purchase receipt you received when your smartcard was first issued. Your lost eTicket RheinMain will be blocked. All tickets stored on it will be replaced - including the transferable ones.

If you also use additional services with the eTicket RheinMain, you will need to notify the respective provider of the new smartcard number. Along with the replacement card, will also receive new registration information for managing your smartcard at meinRMV.

Customers, who purchased their eTicket RheinMain from VGF (Frankfurt), ESWE (Wiesbaden), MVG (Mainz) and HEAG mobilo (Darmstadt), must contact the respective sales partner, to find out which services are available to them.

How is the eTicket RheinMain checked?

As in the past, many bus routes require you to show the ticket when boarding bus. However, the eTicket RheinMain is no longer checked by the crew but instead by a reader with a digital display. Data is exchanged between the built-in chip and the reader via magnetic waves. A visual and acoustic signal indicates the ticket is valid, given that all relevant ticket information is stored on the chip. "OK", a green light or a green check mark will then appear on the screen.

Rail cars do not have permanently installed ticket checkers. In this case, the ticket inspectors working for the transportation companies still check whether or not the passenger has a valid ticket. Ticket inspectors are also still used on buses, especially where there are no ticket checkers (e.g. some urban transport facilities). The ticket inspectors have readers for the eTicket RheinMain.

When an eTicket is checked, a control data record is generated and transferred to the sales system. This transmission serves analysing misuse.

What is stored on the eTicket RheinMain?

1. Ticket information

The purchased season ticket is stored on the smartcard, i.e. what type of ticket it is, in which fare zones it can be used and for how long. A total of up to eight valid and occasionally expired tickets can be stored. In line with data minimisation, the old entries are consecutively overwritten as of the ninth entry.

2. Personal information

All personal information is solely used for purposes of ensuring a smooth execution of the eTicket RheinMain process.

For individual fare products, such as the individual annual ticket or the 65-plus annual ticket and the CleverCard, the chip of your eTicket RheinMain contains the masked name of the owner as well as date of birth and gender. Masked storage means only the first letter of the first name and surname are stored in plain text. In the case of all other transferable fare products, the chip merely contains the ticket information and not any personal information.

3. Transaction data

The last 10 transactions (inspections and ticket purchases) are stored on the smartcard for reasons of transparency.

The eTicket RheinMain features maximum security for its users with respect to data protection. Processing of personal data occurs in compliance with the applicable Data Protection Act of the State of Hesse (HDSG) and the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG). Data protection authorities were involved in developing the process.

All data protection requirements such as transparency, data minimisation and deletion options are met. And you can be sure: Individual movement profiles cannot be generated!

How do I cancel a ticket issued for the eTicket RheinMain?

Tickets issued for an eTicket RheinMain can either be returned or cancelled directly on site or in writing by post. The ticket on the smartcard will be blocked on the requested expiration date of the agreement or upon receipt of the written notice (date stamp is the last date of use) and will then no long be valid.

The smartcard itself does not need to be returned - it can be used again when purchasing new tickets.

Data privacy for the eTicket RheinMain

What’s stored on the eTicket RheinMain

There are three separate sections on the memory chip: for ticket data, personal data and usage data. As in the case of paper tickets, certain information is stored, which identifies the eTicket holder (personal data) and retains, which season ticket were purchased (ticket data). As a service function in line with consumer protection, the last ten transactions are stored on the smartcard in a type of log (usage data). These are recorded as digital customer receipts for complaints, e.g. as verification if a passenger has complaints. These control records can be compared to machine texts and cancellation stamps on paper tickets. At the same time, they serve as a personal control option for the passenger, to make sure that no other person is using his or her eTicket.

It generally applies that: The eTicket RheinMain has a monetary value and therefore, must be protected and stored safely like you would an cash or credit card. 

The type of personal data stored 

The smartcard for individual tickets stores the passenger’s name, gender and date of birth, to enable identifying the season ticket holder when the ticket is checked. At the same time, the name is not stored in plain text but is “masked” using letters, numbers and special characters, i.e. encrypted. This serves associating the name, for instance with the help of an identification card however, cannot be read without said card (example: “John Smith, born 01/03/2001, male” appears as “J1xn@S8h 03/2001 M"). Other data, for instance a passport photograph, was done without in line with data minimisation.

Therefore, the following applies to individual season ticket holders: In addition to the eTicket, please always have your identification card or other photo identification with you.

No personal data is stored on the smartcard for passengers, who only purchase transferable season ticket products.

Which ticket data is stored

The purchased season ticket is of course also stored, i.e. what type of ticket it is, in which fare zones it can be used and for how long. Each ticket check not only includes checking whether or not the passenger is entitled to use it but also whether the transmitted data record has been manipulated or not.

Which usage data is stored

Furthermore, the smartcard stores certain usage data in a log: Every time the eTicket is held up to a ticket checker (so-called transactions) – for example in a bus or during a ticket check. This does not necessarily mean that all rides are completely recorded (for instance because the eTicket did not have a connection to a ticket checker on rides with suburban trains and underground railways). Only the last ten most recent transactions are stored. In line with data minimisation, the old entries are consecutively overwritten as of the eleventh entry.

This usage data consists of time, place and type of transaction, the terminal number, the ticket/product number, the line and vehicle number. The ticket checker sends the data record to the eTicket background system of the RMV and there, it is checked whether there is a sales record for the checked eTicket RheinMain. In doing so, we check for possible misuse such as manipulation, duplicates or double registrations with one smartcard. This control data is solely stored on the passenger’s eTicket. This data record is immediately deleted from the RMV servers after analysing the check. 

Why this data is stored

The aforementioned personal data and ticket data are required to check the eTicket user’s right to use the ticket, i.e. if this ticket is valid for this ride. At the same time, a check is conducted to see if the smartcard has been manipulated or not. 

The log entries help the passenger check for himself or herself: He or she always has the possibility of checking for himself or herself, what his or her eTicket was used for. Therefore, in line with consumer protection, this enables the widest range of data transparency. Upon customer request, the log entries can also be deleted in the future by a sales office.

Who can read the data on the eTicket RheinMain

The ten log entries are solely stored on the smartcard. The network-wide background system, which receives the check transaction data record for instance, only stores the last data record for analysing the check. After that, it is automatically deleted. There is no central server, which stores entries initiated by passengers for a longer period of time. 

RMV employees or employees of the transport companies can only view the last ten transactions in the RMV mobility centres, when the passenger provides his or her smartcard.

Do not worry about movement profiles: First of all, generating such profiles is prohibited by law. Second of all: The few selected log entries (for instance those from buses or ticket checks and thereof, a maximum of ten) do not suffice technically, to create a movement profile. 

A coincidental readout of another ticket is also impossible. The data is exchanged via NFC (Near Field Communication). In this case, the transmitter and receiver must be held on top of each other at a short distance of a few centimetres. If the eTicket is in a wallet and this wallet is in a jacket or trouser pocket, even a wilful readout of another ticket while passing by is more than unlikely. 

In principle, the eTicket must be protected against unauthorised access by third parties as you would your cash or credit card.

And using your eTicket to access the stadtmobil service will give you another financial benefit: the one-off stadtmobil registration fee is reduced to € 25. And it also contains travel credit of € 10.

If you would like make use of this additional function, just take your eTicket, passport and driving licence to the Frankfurt Hauptwache Mobility Centre, Hofheim Mobility Centre, Offenbach Mobility Centre or to the office of Rhein-Main stadtmobil at Frankfurt Central Station and register.

Logo scouter Carsharing scouter provides quick and easy access to carsharing vehicles in Marburg and Giessen at great rates. Almost 75 vehicles are available for lending at about 33 stations in the northern area of the RMV zone. scouter gives you a choice of four vehicle categories, guaranteeing the right vehicle for every taste and every occasion.

eMobil RheinMain

emobil - Clever durch RheinMain

There are currently three eMobil stations in Offenbach, all in the immediate vicinity of S-Bahn and/or bus stops: at Marktplatz, at Nordring/Hafen and at Ostendplatz in Bieber. By 2018, there are to be six eMobil stations in Offenbach altogether, with six electric cars and 20 electric bicycles (pedelecs) available to lease at favourable conditions.

Owners of an RMV commutation ticket get a 10 percent discount on all eMobil car or pedelec rentals.

Register, book and reserve

To register for eMobil, simply go to www.emobil-rheinmain.de and select "Registrieren" in the menu. 

You can book the vehicles around the clock online at www.emobil-rheinmain.de and access the cars and pedelecs with your eTicket or mobile phone. Soon a new app will make rental even easier.

MVGMyBike

MVGmeinRad Once it is fully equipped, the bicycle hire system provided by Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft - MVGMyBike - will have more than 1,000 bicycles available at more than 100 stations 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Accessing the hire bicycles is quick and easy with the eTicket RheinMain smartcard. If you would like to make use of this additional function, first register online then install the software onto your eTicket at the RMV Mobility Advice service at the Mainz Travel Centre. At the same time, your customer account at the MVGMyBike customer portal will be activated and you will be able to manage your data online.

The eTicket as a parking ticket

The RMV parking project makes it even easier to combine bus and train with the car. Anyone with a RheinMain eTicket only needs to register once on the RMV parking Internet site and can subsequently use the “Frankfurt Central Station South” underground car park at the civic centre.  The parking fees are then conveniently deduced from the account. If the project runs successfully, more parking garages should follow.
